School is Cool backpack drive
Through July 31: The DeKalb Area Association of REALTORS is sponsoring its fifth annual “School is Cool” backpack drive. The group collected more than 200 backpacks for children in 2007. This year, backpacks will be divided and disbursed to the DeKalb Salvation Army, the
Federated
Church
in Sycamore, Hand-in-Hand in Rochelle, and Genoa-Kingston-Kirkland Food Pantries. They will distribute the backpacks to qualifying children. The backpack drive runs through July 31. Donations can be dropped off at any local real estate office or at DAAR,

, Sycamore. This drive is just one of the ways DAAR gives back to the community. It also has an annual “Gift from the Heart”

in February and the Community Donation Program, where the group donated $100 per month to a specific entity within the community to use as they see fit.

snack. Passport to Adventure is a program of the DeKalb County Historical Genealogical Society supported by more than 20 local museums and libraries. A start-up grant was provided by the DeKalb County Community Foundation. As part of the events at the Glidden Homestead July 6, children may obtain a Passport and have it stamped that day during their visit. Children and their parents are encouraged to visit all of the participating sites this summer to have their Passports stamped. A second Passport to Adventure Day at the Glidden Homestead is Sunday, Aug. 3, noon-4 p.m. The Glidden Homestead is located at
921 W. Lincoln Hwy.
It is where Glidden invented and first manufactured his 1874 patented "The Winner," one of the most widely-used types of barbed wire. Everyone is welcome July 6.

Garden Walk tickets on sale
Saturday, July 12, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.: The University of Illinois Extension DeKalb County Master Gardeners present an event that gardeners across the county and beyond look forward to with enthusiasm each year, the annual DeKalb County Garden Walk and Plant Sale. Eight private gardens will be open to the public for viewing that feature a variety of styles and plantings. The 18th annual Plant Sale and Garden Walk will be Saturday, July 12, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., rain or shine. The Farm Bureau building at 1350 W. Prairie Dr., Sycamore, will be the site of the Plant Sale and will also feature a Master Gardener Help Desk and other resource information on the program.
