Autumn Leaves: A Century of Fall Fashion

August 24-Dec. 4: Barbara Cole Peters' display of a century of fall fashion takes the spotlight in NIU's Art Museum. Autumn Leaves celebrates the particularly rich brocades and sumptuous velvets of ladies’ fall fashion displayed decade by decade side by side with historic events of the autumn season. Sycamore's Farmers Market

Middlewest Fest

September 10-12: Downtown DeKalb will host Middlewest Fest at various venues produced by Kickstand Productions.  Enjoy live music from bands like Murder By Death, P.O.S., Miss May I. The Russian Circles.  Also, the Middlewest Bazaar will be in Palmer Ct. featuring arts and craft vendors and Against the Wall Independent Film Fest will be at 2pm at the Debutantes School of Cosmetology. September 10: The 11th annual  Castle Challenge will be held at NIU Huskie Stadium in support of DeKalb and Sycamore Booster Clubs.  The Tailgate & Pork chop meal starts at 4:00pm and goes until 7:30pm.  The Sophomore game is at 4:45pm and the Varsity games is at 7:30pm. Tickets are $6.00 for students and $12.00 for adults. NIU Huskie Football Home Opener/Family Day

Wine on the Terrace

September 11: Ellwood House Association, together with Inboden’s Market, merchants of fine wines and gourmet foods, presents “Wine on the Terrace”—a spectacular afternoon of wines, elegant appetizers and music in the lovely setting of the Ellwood House porches and gardens.

This event is a benefit fundraiser for the not-for-profit-Ellwood House Association. All funds raised will be used to support the free tours and other educational programming offered annually by the Ellwood House Museum to DeKalb County schools without charge of any kind.

Tickets are $50.00 per person. “Wine on the Terrace” will be limited to about 200 ticket holders, so don't miss this unique opportunity to experience fabulous wines, cheeses and mouth-watering hors d’oevres while enjoying the beauty of the Ellwood House terrace and gardens. Also included is a silent auction of gift baskets, as well as merchandise and services donated by area businesses.

Tickets should be purchased in advance at the Ellwood House Visitor Center or Inboden's Market in DeKalb. Tickets may also be ordered by mail. $20.00 of the cost of each ticket is a tax-deductible contribution to Ellwood House Association. Call 815-756-4609 for information.

Kite Making Workshop

September 11: The Ellwood House Museum is hosting a kite-making workshop on Saturday, September 11 from 9:00am until noon to help celebrate Kite Fest weekend in DeKalb.  The event is designed for children aged 6-12. Anyone who is interested in kites is welcome to attend.  A $5.00 participation fee per child includes all materials to make a "beetle" kite.  Kits to make a box kite and "flying squirrel" kite will be available for purchase.  The instructor for the workshop is local artist and noted kite-maker Alfred Stark.  The Ellwood House Museum is located at 509 N. 1st Street in DeKalb.  For more information please call: 815/756-4609.

DeKalb Kite Fest

September 12:  Join in the family fun at our annual DeKalb Kite Fest held on the NIU campus at Lucinda & Kishwaukee Drive.  Event is from 11am-4pm. Colorful kites fly over the skies of DeKalb and delight the entire family; kite making for kids, kite candy drop, stunt kites, dancing kites, and more. Civil War Reinactment Weekend

Guided Walking Tours

September 19: This Mid-September tour exploring downtown Sycamore is a prelude to the Sycamore History Museum's next special exhibit that focuses on the business district over the years, "Heartbeat of A Community: Downtown Sycamore". Buildings featured include the 1874 Central Block, Stratford Inn, Ward's Hotel and Daniel Pierce Building. The cost of the tour is $5 and will last about 45 minutes.
